Nikon recalls selected EN-EL15 battery lots over overheating risk

Nikon announced a voluntary recall of selected EN-EL15 rechargeable lithium-ion battery packs on April 24, 2012. The manufacturer identified a problem that could cause a short circuit, overheating and deformation of the battery’s outer casing.

The recall concerns specific battery lots, rather than every EN-EL15 unit or the cameras that use them. Nikon’s service advisory identifies affected packs by an E or F in the ninth position of the lot code beside the recycling symbol.

At the time, the EN-EL15 was used with cameras including the D800, D800E, D7000 and Nikon 1 V1. Nikon provided an exchange process for affected packs; its official service advisory contains the lot-checking details and support information.
