Chinese cultural and tourism videos appear in Times Square

Thirty Chinese cultural and tourism promotional videos were the subject of coverage about screenings in New York’s Times Square in March 2012. The campaign used the square’s large digital displays to put cultural imagery before an international audience.

The screenings formed part of a wider discussion of China’s cultural outreach. Contemporary commentary in Interlude pointed to videos on Times Square screens as a visible example of efforts to promote Chinese culture overseas.

The placement brought tourism promotion into a setting usually associated with commercial advertising, using short films to present cultural subjects outside a conventional exhibition or performance venue.
