Samsung’s GX1983 menswear project brings Cheil’s fashion business to Milan

Samsung’s fashion affiliate Cheil Industries is introducing GX1983, a menswear project developed in Milan. Contemporary reports describe a collection combining casual clothing, sportswear and leather accessories, initially aimed at Italian retailers.

The name refers to Galaxy, the menswear brand launched in South Korea in 1983. This fashion history is separate from the later familiarity of Galaxy as a smartphone name: Cheil’s clothing business predates Samsung’s mobile product range.

The project places Italian design and tailoring traditions within the plans of a Korean fashion business. Reports from the launch identify Milan as the design base and describe selected multibrand stores as the first distribution channel.

Wider European distribution was presented as a later ambition. The announcement concerns that planned expansion, rather than evidence that a full European retail network was already in place.
