Nelson-Jameson, a leading food processing distributor, announced a seventh consecutive 100% score in a Safe Quality Food (SQF) audit at its Turlock, California, strategic distribution center. Audits are conducted by the Eagle Certification Group, an independent certification body licensed by SQF, which has set an internationally recognized and highly respected standard in the industry. An SQF-registered site indicates a commitment to providing quality products that are safely received, handled, stored, and delivered, and a 100% score indicates the highest level of safety and quality by all measures.

“Safety and quality are paramount to operations at Nelson-Jameson, and our dedication to the SQF program runs deep,” says Mike Rindy, President of Nelson-Jameson. “We are very proud to receive a seventh straight 100% score in Turlock. Still, we view SQF as an ongoing journey of constant vigilance and continuous improvement.”

To obtain the SQF certification, companies need to meticulously document program adherence, and this documentation is reviewed, monitored, verified, and validated throughout the year. SQF regularly releases updated codes and plans to release a new code update in 2025-2026.

Nelson-Jameson is audited under a Warehousing & Distribution certification code, and the company is then responsible for writing policies and procedures that pertain to the code. Practitioners at each Nelson-Jameson strategic distribution center are assigned to run point on the program, but SQF responsibilities are shared across the entire facility.

“We want our customers to know that we share their commitment to safety and quality from end to end, and we’re committed to participating in SQF audits each year,” says Rindy.

The SQF program was started at Nelson-Jameson’s Marshfield, Wisconsin headquarters in 2009 with the initial Marshfield audit taking place in 2011. Marshfield’s audits have averaged a score of 98.5% over the past 12 years. The company is expanding its roster of locations participating in the SQF program, with an Amarillo, Texas, location scheduled for its first audit November 2-3, 2023. The company’s upcoming new strategic distribution center in Jerome, Idaho, is on track to participate in SQF in 2025, once it’s fully operational.

Golden Dog Award

Left: Genlin; Right: Animal Activists from Indonesia

The World Dog Alliance (WDA) hosted its annual “Dog Lovers’ Day” celebration in Washington D.C. on September 26, marking significant victories in the global fight against the dog meat trade. Members and staffers of the U.S. Congress gathered to honor the groundbreaking legislation in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, where dog meat has been banned, and to anticipate the upcoming national dog meat ban in South Korea.

At this prestigious event, the WDA bestowed its highest honor, the Golden Dog Award, upon outstanding individuals who have shown exceptional dedication to animal welfare. An Indonesian animal activist was recognized for her pivotal role in advocating for the ban on dog meat in Jakarta. The award was also presented to Michela Brambilla, an esteemed Member of Parliament from Italy, in recognition of her advocacy for animal protection in her country.

U.S. Congressman Andrew Garbarino received the Golden Dog Award for his leadership in championing the cause against dog meat. Congressman Garbarino spearheaded a congressional letter, co-signed by 10 U.S. Representatives, urging the South Korean President to implement a ban on dog meat, a significant step towards ending this cruel practice.

In a momentous development, the WDA celebrated the inclusion of language addressing the International Agreement to Prohibit the Eating of Dogs and Cats in the 2024 Appropriations Bill. The organization expressed gratitude to U.S. Representative David Valadao, a staunch advocate for animal rights, for championing this crucial amendment that reinforces global efforts to eliminate the consumption of dogs and cats.

During the event, Genlin, the founder of the World Dog Alliance, delivered a speech highlighting the importance of global collaboration in eradicating the dog meat trade: “We are going to keep winning because we’re going to change the human society and save dogs and cats.”

Following the celebratory event, Genlin engaged in meaningful discussions at the U.S. Congress Building the next day. He met with U.S. Representatives to delve into comprehensive conversations about the urgent need for a global dog and cat meat ban.

During these discussions, Genlin presented a token of appreciation to Congressman Jared Moskowitz, the driving force behind the impactful Congressional letter to the South Korean President. These discussions further reinforced the collaborative efforts between the World Dog Alliance and the U.S. Congress in the fight against the dog and cat meat trade.

The World Dog Alliance remains committed to its mission of ending the dog meat industry worldwide and extends heartfelt gratitude to all supporters, activists, and legislators who contribute to this noble cause.
